Why Restaurant Design & Theatrics Are the Best Free PR in Today’s Social Media World
If your restaurant isn’t camera-ready, you’re missing out on the most powerful (and free) marketing tool available today.
In the age of TikTok and Instagram, design has become PR. A striking interior, a dramatic cocktail presentation, or even a memorable bathroom mirror can generate millions of views. More importantly, get people through the door.
For restaurants and hospitality brands, this means one thing: aesthetics are no longer optional. It’s pivotal.
From Small-Town Dining to Social-Media Discovery
Growing up in a small town, the most extravagant dinner option was Olive Garden (no shade).
Then I moved to Nashville, and suddenly the restaurant scene felt endless! Beautiful interiors, creative concepts, immersive dining experiences everywhere.
The question quickly became: how do you decide where to go?
Like most of Gen Z, I turned to social media. Instead of Yelp reviews or Google recommendations, I looked at where my friends were posting, which restaurants were trending on TikTok, and which spots kept appearing in my feed.
And the pattern was obvious: the places getting posted weren’t just serving great food - they were creating a visual experience.
The Rise of “Post Worthy” Restaurants
Great food will always be the foundation of any successful restaurant.
But when it comes to free PR and organic marketing, aesthetics are a close second.
Try a quick experiment: open Instagram and scroll through your favorite influencer or celebrity’s posts. When they tag a restaurant, what stands out first? Usually it’s the lighting, the decor, the ambiance, or the moment - not necessarily the dish.
Influencers and guests essentially become walking billboards, promoting restaurants to thousands (sometimes millions) of followers just by posting their experience.
When the Vibes GO Viral
Take Sexy Fish Miami as an example.
Search it on TikTok, and you’ll find hundreds of viral videos. Not reviewing the menu, but showcasing the restaurant’s iconic bathroom mirrors and over-the-top design. This TikTok in particular has over 2.5 million views.
Another restaurant that consistently appears on my FYP is Papi Steak. Guests aren’t just posting their meal, they’re posting the entire spectacle: the presentation, the energy, the theatrical dining moments. This post has 12.6 million (!!!) views.
Now, not every restaurant needs a $1,000 steak to get attention. Menu prices don’t have to be outrageous if the vibes speak for themselves. This dreamy, hidden coffee shop has 7.3 million views.
Atmosphere Is the New Word-of-Mouth
And if you look closely at many viral restaurant posts, you’ll notice something interesting:
Most people aren’t explaining what to order.
They’re posting the moment. The group photo, the ambiance, the proof that they were there.
That’s modern word-of-mouth marketing.
The Takeaway for Hospitality Brands
For restaurants and hospitality concepts, the formula is simple:
Food should always come first.
But the vibe should come second.
Because when guests can capture a great photo, video, or experience, they’ll promote your brand organically to their audience.
And that kind of PR is priceless.
